in concert statement
The chants of thousands of fans stand between me and a set of doors. I walk into pitch black and hear echoes throughout the building. A blue flood light spreads across the crowd and by some natural force, the people turn to waves in the ocean and start to move from the strum of a guitar. This is the best way I can describe the feeling I experience.
The phrase "in concert" can be defined as something or someone working together in a synchronized and harmonic fashion. From 2008 through 2013, I photographed musicians across a variety of genres and venues. in concert explores the relationships between the concertgoers' experience and the natural world. I'm interested in the visual and metaphorical relationships that sit between the audience and the movements in nature. My fascination in harmonization and synchronization is experienced when various elements come together and start to form shapes and patterns. This could be discovered through patterns and movements when looking at a blowing field of grass and photographing a mosh pit that is created in seconds. Within the chaos comes form and organization among both these elements.
